Railway: train that will connect Brasília to the coast of Espírito Santo may carry passengers in the future.

Construction is projected to begin in 2027.

Construction of the Juscelino Kubitschek Railway is expected to advance between 2030 and 2031, when the new railway corridor crossing Brasília and reaching São Mateus , in Espírito Santo , is scheduled for completion . The route exceeds 1,300 kilometers and reaches 38 municipalities in Goiás and Minas Gerais . The project is emerging as one of the biggest bets on national railway expansion.

The initiative is part of the federal Pro Trilhos program and is under concession to Petrocity Ferrovias. The company estimates an investment of over 14 billion reais. The route will feature transshipment and cargo support units distributed along the way to function as logistics hubs.

The train that will connect Brasília to the coast of Espírito Santo reinforces the link between the agricultural, mineral, and industrial production of the Central-West region and the interior of Minas Gerais and Goiás with the Espírito Santo coast. The transport is expected to supply the Porto Central port in São Mateus , considered strategic for expanding the flow of goods.

The project is undergoing environmental assessment by IBAMA , which is analyzing the impact study already submitted. The project received recognition of public utility status from the National Land Transport Agency in 2024. The expropriation process is progressing while the company awaits the completion of the licensing process. The internal forecast is to begin construction in 2027, provided all authorizations are issued on time.

Rail expansion reignites dispute over new logistics corridors.

The railway forms part of the so-called Central-East Corridor , which could exceed two thousand kilometers by connecting Brasília, Goiás, Minas Gerais, and Espírito Santo . Projections indicate more than 200,000 direct and indirect jobs throughout the implementation and operation phases. Experts see the corridor as a central piece in rebalancing the Brazilian transportation matrix, historically dependent on highways.

Petrocity claims that operating a train with one hundred wagons can replace up to 300 trucks and reduce carbon emissions. The promise of lower logistics costs strengthens the appeal of the project among producers and distributors.

A train that will connect Brasília to the coast of Espírito Santo will be able to transport passengers.

The company is considering, in the distant future, the inclusion of passenger trips on the train that will connect Brasília to the coast of Espírito Santo. The railway would open up a new mobility option between the Central-West and Southeast regions. In the current scenario, however, the operation is not economically sustainable, but it remains in future plans.

Historical rescue fuels the resumption of rail transport.

The railway was named after Juscelino Kubitschek in reference to the developmentalist ideal that marked the creation of Brasília. The EFJK stands out as a symbol of a new railway phase in the country. If the delivery occurs on schedule, it will be the largest private railway in Brazil and could inaugurate a new axis of national economic integration.

Pró Trilhos established the authorization for railway construction and operation by the private sector.

The Pró Trilhos program was created by Provisional Measure No. 1,065/21 . The program established authorization for railway construction and operation by the private sector. This change opened up opportunities for companies to build and manage railways, branch lines, yards, and terminals without depending on the traditional concession model.

Public policy focuses on increasing the attractiveness of investments in greenfield and brownfield projects. As a result, transport companies, logistics operators, and industries have begun requesting permits to build and operate their own rail lines. This opening encourages the vertical integration of the supply chain and expands the Brazilian rail network.

The Ministry of Infrastructure has already received 76 requests for the implementation of railways under the authorization regime. The proposals total nineteen thousand kilometers of new private lines in sixteen states, with investments exceeding two hundred and twenty-four billion reais. The expectation is to create two million six hundred thousand direct and indirect jobs, in addition to reducing transportation costs, decreasing carbon dioxide emissions, and modernizing the national railway system.
